'Cats Classic Runners-Up, Lady 'Cats Grab Consolation Crown; Wrestlers Place in Weekend Tourney

The Madill boys basketball team lost 57-30 to Mount St. Mary in the Madill Winter Classic championship game Saturday night to close the weekend with the runners-up trophy. The girls won 43-39 over Pauls Valley to claim the consolation championship.

“I am very pleased that we were able to get to the finals of the Winter Classic,” Madill boys basketball head coach Brett Weiberg said. “The kids played hard and at times we played well. I am disappointed that we did not play better in the championship game but Mount  St. Mary had a lot to do with that. They are a good team and it gives us an idea of where we need to be.”
The Lady Wildcats used the momentum of a 60-23 drubbing of Boswell in the consolation semi Friday afternoon to climb over a tough Pauls Valley club Saturday. The Lady Panthers held the 8-6 edge after one quarter. Pauls Valley stretched it to a 18-13 by the half. Madill continued to trail 31-25 by the close of the third. But, the Lady ‘Cats netted 18 points in the final stanza while limiting Pauls Valley to eight to slide by the Panthers. Jayden Weiberg had seven of her 14 points in the final frame. Hannah Elkins had four points. Korlee Cunningham-Martin tossed in four points. Abbie Lambertsen had four points. Joslyn Stumblingbear had 13 points and Allyson Knight had a free throw.

Madill’s girls poured in 22 points in the first quarter against Boswell Friday to leave no doubt in the consolation semifinal win. Lydia Landgraf collected 10 points in the effort. Stumblingbear put up nine points and Weiberg added seven. She made the all-tourney group.

The Madill boys got a bucket from senior Kendall Robertson to edge out Boswell 37-35 in the semifinal on Friday night. It was tied 35-all on the ‘Cats’ final possession of the final quarter. Robertson was free in the lane next to the baseline and scored with just two seconds showing on the clock. The Scorpions’ desperation shot failed and the ‘Cats claimed victory. Boswell took the early 6-0 lead before Wildcats’ senior Zeke Fuentes came through to nail two 3-pointers in the first quarter to finish with a team-high 24 points Friday. That performance would eventually land him on the all-tourney team. Robertson finished with six points. Junior guard RJ Morris chipped in five points. Nick Northcutt had two points.

Madill’s boys opened the tournament with a lopsided 53-17 triumph against Marietta. Fuentes paced Madill with 18 points. RJ Morris and Northcutt had eight point.Cornelius Smth tossed in three points. Greg Padgett hit two 3-ponters. Robertson collected five points.

The Lady ‘Cats suffered a 56-45 setback to eventual finalist Marietta Thursday.

“We all knew we didn't play well that game (Marietta) especially in the fourth quarter when we missed 7 free throws and 8 dinkers,” Madill girls head coach Shawn Runyan said.  “They (Madill girls) are competitors though and that fight helped us get by Pauls Valley.”

“I thought we had a very good tournament.  All of the teams played hard and we had several very competitive games from both the boys and girls sides,”
Madill athletics director Weiberg said.
“I am so thankful for the help from our school employees, community volunteers and our sponsors. Our school staff and administrators and the people in the community of Madill are the absolute best. They are truly what enable us to have a high quality tournament.”
