Banded Together: Madill Group Accomplishes Historic Achievement at Regional Wednesday

The Madill band was super Wednesday in McAlester at the regional contest. The band earned a superior rating from the judges for the second consecutive year. According to Madill band director Kendal Hasty, this is the first time in school history that this feat has been accomplished. Madill received a superior rating at the regional contest in 1993 and again in 1995. But, this is believed to be the first superior rating at regional contest in consecutive years.

"One thing that puts this Superior above last year  is that every judge gave us the highest score possible," Hasty said.

Hasty said this rating puts the Madill band in the winners bracket for a sweepstakes award, which is equivalent to a state championship.

In order to earn a Sweepstakes Award, the band must do the following: 1) Earn a Superior (1) Rating at Regional Marching Contest. 2) Earn a Superior (1) at State Concert Contest and 3) Earn a Superior (1) at State Sight-Reading Contest.

Hasty detailed the contests in the following:

Regional Marching: Students must perform their memorized music while demonstrating good marching technique and ability to impress three adjudicators based on one performance.

State Concert Concert Contest: Students perform their prepared pieces for three adjudicators at such a level that all three judges rate them a Superior Band. To even make state, they have to go through the District Level and also impress three judges there.

State Sight-Reading Contest: Immediately after State Concert, the band will enter a second room and perform a piece they've never seen before to demonstrate their ability to read music. They only have 8 minutes to go through the pitches, rhythms, dynamics, and other things the music requires silently before making an attempt to play it perfectly.  They must impress 3 judges enough to earn a Superior Rating.

So What's Next?

"There is no offseason in Band. marching competitions may be over, but now we move towards honor band auditions, Veterans' Day activities, and our Winter Concert," Hasty said. "After Christmas we will then be prepping for contest again in hopes we will make a return trip to the State Concert Band Contest."
