As Al Stewart sang in the 1970s, it is ‘ the year of the ‘Cat’ band in 2021. The group qualified for the Outstanding Achievement Award during the state contest in Elk City Wednesday. The first of its’ kind in Madill program history. They had not been to the state contest since 2002. And as Green Day sang in the 1990s ‘I hope you had the time of your life’. Evidently the Madill band did today while creating their own place in Madill High School history.
“The concert band got and Excellent rating(2) on Stage and a superior (1) in sightreading. The Symphonic band got a superior rating on stage and an excellent rating in sightreading,” Madill band director Kendal Hasty said Wednesday night.”This means we missed out on the Sweepstakes Award, but we did qualify for the Outstanding Achievement Award. This is the the equivalent of a runner up basically. This is the 1st award of this nature in school history. “
The band is under the leadership of Hasty with assistants Samantha Falkner and Cayden Howard. The band is housed in the recently constructed fine arts facility on campus. That was made possible from the bond approval from the residents of the district.
Throughout the season, Madill marched to a halftime show featuring the grammy-award winning group Green Day. So it wasn’t the ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ for the Wildcats’ band in 2021. They ‘realized’ dreams Wednesday in Elk City.
