The Madill girls basketball team closed out the regular season Monday night with a convincing 49-27 win over Marietta. However, the boys dropped their game 51-44 to the Indians. Dalan Larason was named the Madill Schools teacher of the year in a public ceremony at halftime of the girls contest.
The girls played solidly throughout the game Monday night. They played Marietta to a 12-all tie by the end of the first quarter. Then Madill commenced to shutting down the Lady Indians attack the remainder of the night. The Lady Wildcats only allowed four points to Marietta in the second quarter. The Lady ‘Cats continued to put the clamps on Marietta in the third period by only giving up six points. They ended Monday by surrendering just five points in the final frame.
Kristen Chapa had a team-best 11 points on the night. Freshman Abbie Lambertsen followed her with 10 points. Jayden Weiberg had seven points on the evening. Senior Caitlin Gillis chipped in five points. Kelsie Lambertsen and Ashlynn Arnold each had four points. Maria Flores, Mariana Mendez, Ana Veras and Brooklynn Nixon had two points apiece in the victory.
Marietta free throws in the final minute proved costly for the Wildcats in the loss Monday. A see-saw battle for three and a half quarters finally saw the Indians sink crucial charity pitches for the victory. Asa Robertson’s free throw with 1;55 pulled the ‘Cats to within 46-44 of Marietta. However, that would prove to be Madill final points of the evening. The Indians got key rebounds off of Madill misses from long distance in the closing minutes. Those rebounds led to forced fouls from Madill and subsequent points from the line for the Indians. Free throws from Trace Stewart came with 42.6 seconds left and Zane Nutter with 22.3 seconds remaining in the game.
The Wildcats led 15-14 by the end of the first quarter. The two clubs were knotted 28-all by the intermission. The Wildcats nudged ahead of the Indians 41-39 by the close of the third stanza.
Miguel Duran led the way for Madill with 13 points. Seth Coleman collected 11 points. Diego Flores netted 10 points. Asa Robertson chipped in five points in the effort. Wyatt Gray had three points for the ‘Cats. Luke Magness had two points.
